Rules and Regulations
A. General Rules Applying to all Divisions:
- This Challenge stresses good sportsmanship and lots of fun. Anyone who is assessed a major or misconduct penalty for abuse of officials will be expelled for the balance of the Challenge.
- The Challenge will have four divisions 4 (four) divisions:
• Major Novice
• Minor and Major Atom
• Minor and Major Peewee
• Minor and Major Bantam
- Each division will have a Houseleague and Rep division. *
- All teams must have a minimum of 7 (seven) and a maximum of 10 (ten) players, with no more than 3 (three) bench personnel
- Players may play for only 1 (one) registered team for the weekend of the Challenge
- Goalies are considered players
- If a division is not full at the time of the Challenge, the decision to offer it will be up to the discretion of Skater’s Edge 3 on 3 Challenge committee
- Photocopies of all players’ cards must be submitted with the completed registration form
- Players’ cards are those of the current year
- If Players’ cards are not available proof of player participation ie. tournament roster, team website will be sufficient.
- The Challenge Committee reserves the right to accept or reject any or all entries
- All decisions pertaining to placement of teams, and objections or protests involving any conduct in the Challenge are final.
B. Rules Applying to Rep/Select Division (A, AA, or AAA):
- Each team will register a maximum of 3 (three) carded AAA players
- There is no limit to the number of carded A or AA players
- A player carded A or AA playing for any team who has participated in any sanctioned AAA tournament during the regular season or playoffs shall be considered a AAA player for the for the 3on3 Challenge.
C. Jerseys:
- Teams are to supply their own matching jerseys
D. Game Sheets:
- Must be filled out 15 minutes prior to game time
- Game sheets not filled out on time will be assessed a penalty, resulting in one (1) penalty shot.
- List players in the order that they will take penalty shots at the end of regulation time
- The Challenge recommends alternating players lists so as to give everyone the opportunity to take penalty shots
- Game sheets not submitted in time will have players randomly listed by a Challenge representative, with no appeal.
E. General Game Rules:
- Games consist of two 12 minute straight time periods
- Each team is given a two 2 minute warm up
- Flooding will occur after every second game
- Each team is guaranteed 4 (four) games
- THERE IS NO BODY CONTACT ALLOWED
- Slap shots are allowed
- No stick or equipment measurements will be allowed
- CSA approved equipment MUST be worn at all times
- Mouth and neck guards are mandatory
- Goal differentials larger than 7 (seven) will not be displayed on the score board
- Goals will be recorded on the score sheet only.
F. Rules of Play:
- Face-offs will be at the beginning of each game and each period
- If the puck leaves the playing surface, play will be awarded to the unoffending team
- Possession will be awarded in either the neutral zone or their own end, whichever applies.
- Icing will not be called. The center line is not in use, meaning two line offside passes will not be called.
- The referee will blow the whistle when: a goal is scored, the goalie freezes the puckor an offside at the blue line has occurred
- The referee will yell out to “clear the zone”. The formerly attacking team must clear the zone, including the blue line. They CANNOT play the puck while it is on the way out of the zone untilthe puck clears the blue line or all players have cleared the zone
- Failure to do so may result in the assessment of a delay-of-game penalty.
- Tied games, after regulation time and penalty shots taken, will remain and be recorded as a tie in the round robin
G. Penalties and Penalty Shots:
A) Penalties
- Infractions are assessed as penalty shots
- When an infraction occurs the referee will raise his arm and call the penalty
- The player causing the infraction must head immediately to his/her bench and be replaced by a team mate
- When a penalty has been assessed and recorded by the timekeeper, the puck will be turned over to the non-offending team in their defensive or neutral zone (whichever is nearest to where the play was stopped) and the game play will resume
- The game official will indicate to the timekeeper the appropriate infraction by hand signal, as well as which bench has been assessed the penalty
- Penalties will result in one (1) penalty shot for each infraction for the opposing team
B) Penalty Shots
- Players will shoot in the order listed on the game sheet at the end of regulation time
- Teams will take all of their penalty shots consecutively
- The team with fewer goals at the end of regulation time will shoot their penalty shots first
- If the score is tied at the end of regulation time, the visiting team will shoot first
C) Aggressive Play, Excessive Penalties: (Clarification 2012)*
In the spirit of Fair Play and Sportsmanship, aggressive play resulting in excessive penalties will result in the penalty shots being rounded off. When both teams have 5 penalties or more teams will have their penalty shots rounded off in increments of 5.

*Please note any team assessed more than 8 penalties before the end of regulation time, may result in the game/tournament officials calling the game and the offending team losing the game regardless of the score.
The game is 2 periods of 12 minutes straight time. It is the responsibility of the coaches to stress Sportsmanship and Fair Play. There is no excuse for rough play and excessive penalties.
H. Standings and Tie-Breakers:
- Points will be awarded to teams on the basis of: 2 (two) points awarded for a win, 1 (one) point awarded to each team for a tie. No points awarded for losses.
- During playoff games, penalty shots will be used to break ties. Teams will alternate taking penalty shots one per team, until the game has been decided
- The shooting order will continue after all game awarded penalty shots are taken (if necessary). The next listed player after the last penalty will shoot and rotation will continue through the order indicated on the game sheet
- Standings of teams tied with equal points at the end of Round Robin will be determined as follows:
- Number of wins
- Head to-head results (will not apply if more than 2 teams are involved)
- Goals average (total goals for) divided by (total goals for + total goals against).
- Fewest penalties overall.
- Coin Toss.
I. Protests:
- Referee calls are not subject to protests.
- Protests must be submitted, in writing, within one (1) hour of completion of the game being protested
- A deposit of $50.00 must accompany each protest
- If the protest is awarded, the deposit will be refunded
- If the protest is denied, the deposit is forfeited
- The Challenge committee’s decisions are binding and final.
